Learn how to start planting season the right way with soil preparation, garden design, indigenous seed selection, and practical homesteading tips for beginners.
Introduction
Today officially marks the start of my planting season. But I didn’t grab seeds and rush to the soil with the first raindrops.
I started with preparation—the quiet work most gardeners skip… and often regret later.
There’s something magical about the first rains. The air smells different, the soil softens, and you can almost feel the land inviting you to plant. But over the years, experience has taught me this important lesson: rushing to plant without preparing leads to mistakes you’ll spend the rest of the season fixing.

Steps I Took
So, here’s what I did today instead:
- Tested my soil texture and moisture because healthy soil means healthy roots.
- Designed my garden layout to accommodate a variety of crops.
- Matched crops to this season’s early rains which arrived a month ahead of its tradition.
- Sorted indigenous seeds from last season by selecting the strongest, healthiest ones.
- Checked my already planted seedlings and noticed some had sprouted.
After gardening for decades, one truth has become clear, that your harvest is decided before you plant.
It’s decided in the soil you prepare.
It’s decided in the crops you choose.
It’s decided in the patience you exercise before the first seedling appears.
My Gardening Journey
This year, I’m sharing my real, daily gardening journey. Not just the polished results. I’ll document what I do each day: the wins, the challenges, the mistakes, and the lessons I learn along the way.
My goal is simple: to help new gardeners—and especially busy midlife’s—learn how to grow clean, nutrient-dense food for healthier living, even with limited time or space.
If you’ve ever wanted to grow your own vegetables and other foods but weren’t sure where to start, I hope following my journey gives you the confidence to take that first step.
Now I’m curious: when your planting season begins, what’s the very first thing you do?
Stay tuned for Day 2!
